A family in front of their house in Almere with solar PV panels on the roof. It is the Netherlands youngest town having been reclaimed from the sea. This planned city is very green, with space heating provided from a nearby combined heat and power plant, and from Sun Island, a circle of solar thermal panels which provides hot water for the residents. Zoneiland contains 520 solar panels covering an area of approximately 7000 m2. Annually it provides 9,750 giga joules of renewable, sustainable energy, equal to 10% of Almere city's total annual energy needs.
